CO2 laser radiation at 10.6 μm is the most suitable wavelength for wood marking. Incident CO2 laser radiation cause the darkening of the material which produces marks with impressive contrasts. Deep engraving into wood is also possible and can generate attractive 3D art pieces.

Wood laser marking

The marking of organic materials like wood, is based on material carbonisation which produces darkening of the surface and marks with high contrast. Wood laser engraving can be performed too. The 10.6 μm wavelength of CO2 lasers has a good absorption and so is ideal to work on organic materials. Although high contrast black markings can be obtained on any wood material, some materials are more easily laser marked that others. This means that for an industrial implementation where several wood materials need to be marked, the contrast may differ from one material to another. For example, maple is more easily marked than red oak. A proper fume extraction system is required to move the fumes away from the work area.
