Understanding steel laser marking

Laser marking an identifier on steel can be done with two different processes: annealing or ablating

Laser annealing involves the localised heating of the material. Depending on the temperature attained, a subtopical oxidation of the material takes place. This process maintains the surface roughness of the surface since no material is removed from it. 

Laser ablation is done with higher pulse of energy and leads to the melting, the vaporisation or the removal of material from the surface of the targeted metal in order to change its appearance. This process allows the removal of a precise thickness of metal from the surface.
