Laser Cleaning & Marking
Electric Vehicle Battery Modules

Battery modules have busbars and hundreds of poles that need to be cleaned before welding, so even a 1% inconsistency can lead to massive recalls. Laser cleaning provides the precision required to ensure consistent cleaning results and prevent quality issues.

The same laser can also be used to mark battery trays and EV drive units. With our unique marking technology, you can even engrave 2D codes that maintain traceability through shotblasting—which is ideal for EV drive units.

Applications

Benefits of Laser Cleaning
for Battery Cells

  • Ensure a consistent cleaning quality before welding/soldering
  • Protect the surrounding components from burns and negative effects
  • Prevent expensive recalls caused by weak welds
  • Integrate a green process without consumables or chemicals
  • Keep up with short cycle times
  • Perform laser marking with the same laser

Recommended Solutions

No need to deal with several suppliers and wonder who is accountable for what. We provide all the features, peripherals and support needed to integrate the laser in your manufacturing process.

Battery Laser Cleaning Machine

Adapted to the conveyor system, this machine can either be manually loaded or fully automated.  When manually loaded, a transfer table or conveyor is included to help operators move the module.

A vision system detects module positioning errors and dynamically adjusts cleaning locations. This system can be used to clean modules on the fly or while the conveyor line is stopped.

Features Typically Included
  • Multiple laser heads or a gantry system to reach all battery cells and busbars
  • A dust & fume extraction unit to maintain a clean & safe environment
  • A Cognex camera to validate cleaning quality

Rotary Table Cleaning Workstation

This machine can be integrated onto conveyors to keep up with challenging cycle times, as one module can be prepared for cleaning while another one is cleaned.

Operators or robots can load the module into the machine. This machine is also equipped with a vision system that detects module positioning errors and adjusts laser cleaning accordingly.

Features Typically Included
  • Multiple laser heads or a gantry system to reach all battery cells and busbars
  • A dust & fume extraction unit to maintain a clean & safe environment
  • A Cognex camera to validate cleaning quality

Benefits of Laser Marking
for Battery Trays

  • Mark multiple parts with the same machine and without fixtures
  • Leverage your existing robot
  • Minimize your footprint
  • Etch high-quality markings
  • Minimize your impact on cycle time with high-speed lasers

Open Air Laser Marking Machine

With an open-air design, this machine leverages your existing robot, which holds the part during laser marking. This prevents the use of large fixtures and minimizes the machine’s footprint.

The machine can also be equipped with vision systems to detect and mark multiple parts as well as to provide guidance to the robot positioning the part.

Features Typically Included
  • A vision system that provides high-precision guidance to the robot presenting the battery tray, accounting for imperfect parts and biscuits
  • A Cognex camera to validate code quality
  • An air knife to prevent dust accumulation on the lens & ensure consistent marking quality

Rotary Laser Marking Machine

Shotblast resistance is a challenging requirement that demands longer marking times than typical laser marking.

To minimize impact on cycle time, this fully automated machine is equipped with a rotary table that allows the marking to be done in hidden time.

Features Typically Included
  • A Cognex camera to validate that codes will live up to the marking requirements as soon as they are marked
  • An autofocus system to compensate for misplacements or biscuit shape variations
  • An air knife to prevent dust accumulation on the lens & ensure consistent marking quality
  • A dust extraction unit to maintain a clean work environment

I was worried laser cleaning would be too slow, but Laserax had a solution for us. They proposed a turnkey solution with three 100W laser heads to clean all 1,200 zones on our modules. The total cleaning time with loading, vision adjustments, cleaning, and unloading was only 25 seconds—short enough to prevent bottlenecks.

When I saw Laserax’s video of the Open-Air machine, I was surprised someone manufactured a turnkey solution that perfectly fit our needs. Since our cycle time was long, we had room to add an extra step to our robot’s operation cycle.

In the die casting industry, we shotblast a lot of parts. Laserax’s technology is a game changer for us. It has allowed us to meet new traceability requirements and regulations, and be the first choice when applying for automotive OEM programs.
