Laser etching and marking can generate a wide range of grey levels from white to black on stainless steel surfaces. It can also create coloration by properly varying the laser parameters.

Examples of applications includes marking serial numbers on tubes, engraving QR or datamatrix codes on T bars, L or C channels, or etching logos on sheets or pieces.

Stainless steel laser etching

Laser marking of an identifier on stainless steel can be done with two different processes: annealing or ablating.

Laser stainless steel annealing requires the localised heating of the material. Depending on the temperature attained, a sub-topical oxidation of the material takes place.

This process can produce different colors on pixels at the surface of the stainless steel part.

Laser annealing does not affect the surface roughness of the targeted material, nothing is removed from it. 

Laser ablation of stainless steel is done with higher pulses of energy and leads to the melting, the vaporisation or the removal of specks of material from the surface.
